Now, I'm going to introduce another Korean guy in New Zealand who is becoming famous for what he has done. Thanks to one of my iReflect classmates, I could find this wonderful guitar performance video.

This YouTube video clip shows 24-year-old Korean man named Jeong-Hyun Lim playing electronic guitar. The Korean, who was born in Seoul, Korea, started studying in New Zealand as a secondary student and currently studying in Auckland University. After uploading his electronic guitar playing video on You Tube site, he has become very popular among lots of people around the world. Also, he has been introduced on ‘New York Times’, ‘CNN’ and the New Zealand’s ‘Campbell Live’ etc. (You can watch those interviews under the 'Video' on the website)

I’m sure that everyone, who has seen this video, must think that his performance is really great and impressive. Of course I feel the same way. This is seriously cool. Like I mentioned before while introducing the Korean golfer, it’s amazing that he’s become known to many people around the world by being introducing on the world-famous media such as CNN, New York Times, which means the country, Korea might become known to the world at the same time since he is from Korea. After seeing his performance, I’ve realised that there are so many talented people in Korea. There are so many great Korean people out there in the world, glorifying the name of our country. I'm so proud of them and myself to be a part of Korea.

Danny Lee Wins the 2008 Western Amateur

I've found a video clip that talks about Danny Lee who has become No.1 in the world golf amateur by winning the 2008 Western Amateur. About after 3 minutes, they start introducing him.

Danny Lee (born 24 July 1990) is an amateur golfer from Rotorua, New Zealand. He became the number one ranked golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking on 20 August 2008. Lee was originally born in South Korea and emigrated to New Zealand at the age of eight. He became a naturalised New Zealander on 2 September 2008. Lee became the youngest ever winner of the U.S. Amateur in August 2008, aged 18 years, one month. Tiger Woods was the previous youngest ever winner of the men's golf championship in 1994. For more details, please go to New Zealand Golf.

Well, I'm not such a fan of golf and I have never watched or played golf before. However, the fact that Danny Lee was born in Korea got my attention to the video. I tend to feel quite proud of myself being Korean when someone from my country achieves some big things like this, winning the world tournament and establishing himself to the world. Well, everyone would feel the same way. I think it is a great way for foreigner to get to know Korea.

Right after winning the competition, 2008 US Amateur golf champ Danny Lee granted New Zealand Citizenship.

One of negative effects of immigration

The picture above shows that the migration process, that is, shifting from one region or country to another brings about negative aspects to immigrants. With new and different conditions, the immigrants are likely to get much stresses thus it can badly influence their morbidity.

“Migration is the process of social change whereby an individual moves from one cultural setting (e.g. Korea) to another (New Zealand) for the purposes of settling down either permanently or for a long period. Such a shift can be for any number of reasons, commonly economic, political or educational betterment. The process is inevitably stressful and stress can lead to mental illness” (Bhugra, & Jones, 2001, p216)

Well, I'm not a migration but i totally agree with what has been just said above and I can understand how it feels like being away from their own country and face completely different culture. This is because I'm experiencing the similar situation. I have been living in New Zealand for almost 3 years as an international student and it sometimes can be very stressful living apart from my family. I think living in an unfamiliar cultural setting is probably the main reason why all those negative things occur. Even though it may be something that we can not avoide, we need to find a fine solution to deal with all the problems.

Korea & New Zealand

Korean people began coming to New Zealand comparatively recently: the first census record was in 1966. Koreans mainly arrived in two waves: in the early to mid-1990s and in the early 2000s

"In the decade from 1991 New Zealand’s Korean population increased 20-fold, from 930 to 19,026. This rapid growth reflected a booming Korean economy which allowed many to accumulate the capital required to emigrate"

"In 2003, 48 million people were crammed into South Korea, a land area smaller than the North Island of New Zealand. With the pressures of life in the teeming capital of Seoul and other cities, and the competitive nature of the Korean education system, many middle-class people looked overseas for a lifestyle change" (Yoon, 2007)

A major motivation for Korean migration to NZ is to give children a lower-pressure educational experience in an English-speaking country as well as a cleaner environment. I totally agreed with this motivation since the Korean educational environment is extremely demanding and competitive. This has been also the main reason for me to come to New Zealand to experience less-pressure education.

Things that I'm going to talk about in this blog ...

  • The topic I have chosen is about the immigration from South Korea to many other countries in the world, particularly to New Zealand

  • NZ is one of the countries that has becoming multi-cultural because of the people moving in from all over the world

  • Furthermore, I'm going to talk about anything interesting that relates to Korea and New Zealand together
